Terry MacDermot

Terry MacDermot is a South African born artist who emigrated to Australia in 1974. He worked as a television cameraman in Zimbabwe and later for Channel 10 in Adelaide.

In 1979 he graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree, which qualified him to teach Visual Arts and Screen studies at a secondary school level. His career in teaching has spanned 40 years and has seen him work in a number of schools in South Australia and New South Wales. He was Head of the Visual Arts Department at Barker College in Sydney and at St Michael’s College in Adelaide, where he taught for 30 years. He has also run many courses at TAFE and WEA over the years and has recently retired from teaching.

MacDermot is a painter and illustrator who has works in private collections in Europe, America, Sweden, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Australia. As an illustrator, he has published two children’s books, one in collaboration with his wife Jann Makepeace, which were used to raise funds for disabled children in Zimbabwe.

As a painter his gestural works can be described as expressively abstract with a focus on the subtleties of mark making. He lists Willem de Kooning, Brett Whiteley, Jim Dine, Jason Craighead and Cy Twombly as his major influences.
