Terry MacDermot

Terry MacDermot is a South African born artist who was raised in Zimbabwe and emigrated to Australia in 1974. He worked as a television cameraman in Zimbabwe and later for Channel 10 in Adelaide. In 1979 he gained a Bachelor of Education Degree, which qualified him to teach Visual Arts and Screen Studies at a Secondary School level. His career in teaching has seen him work in a number of schools in South Australia and New South Wales. He has also run many art courses at TAFE and the WEA.
MacDermot is a painter and illustrator and has works in private collections in Germany, Sweden, America, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Australia. As an illustrator, he has published two children’s books, one of which draws attention to the plight of children with a disability in Zimbabwe. The proceeds of both books were used to raise funds for these children.
MacDermot’s gestural paintings are expressively abstract with a focus on the subtleties of mark making. He lists Willem de Kooning , Jim Dine, Jason Craighead and Cy Twombly as his major influences.
